Earlier this week the St. Joseph Band of Ghajnsielem, directed by Mro Sunny Galea and assisted by Mro Frankie Debono, performed its annual Instrumental Concert in front of a large crowd at the main square.

For the past two years the concert had been held in front of the band club premises. This year the Society said that it felt it was appropriate to use the old bandstand to commemorate the past, present and future of the stage which hosts the main band performances throughout the feast week.

The St Joseph Band Executive Committee unveiled its new bandstand at the concert. The design of the ‘Plancier il-Gdid’ was commissioned by local artist Manwel Grech from Victoria.

During the concert, a commemorative gift was also presented to Musical Director Mro Sunny Galea as a tribute for the 10 years of service to the Society.

On his part, Mro Galea thanked the Committee and the bandsmen and promised that he will keep the Society close to his heart until his final days. President Gino Cauchi made a short speech for the occasion and thanked him for the services and dedication.

The concert included a varied programme, such as ‘Evita’ and ‘The Music of the Night’ by Andrew Lloyd Webber, ‘La Cumparsita’ by G.H. Matos Rodrigues, ‘You Raise me up’ by Rolf Lovland, The Merry Wives of Windsor by Otto Nicolai and ‘Giubileo D’Argento’ by Carlo Dioacono.

A Maltese Rhapsody directed by Mro Sunny Galea, brought the concert to a close.

A reception was held afterwards with many guests taking the opportunity to view the design of the Plancier il-Gdid in the Musical Archive room.
