Minister Helena Dalli, speaking during a recent seminar organised by the Malta Health Network on voluntary work said, “more people, especially youth, should be encouraged by the Government and civil society to take up voluntary posts with local NGOs. Voluntary work helps them to build a sense of self-worth and a true feeling of pride for one’s contribution to creating a better society. It also improves their employability, and this is especially important for those who are out of work.”

The Minister spoke about the importance of social dialogue between Government and the voluntary sector. She explained that nearly half a million Euro in grants were recently given to 23 local NGOs to support them in their services, projects and initiatives.

Dr Dalli spoke about the important role of MEUSAC in this regard. She said that “MEUSAC gives technical assistance to NGOs and other organisations within the civil society, including unions, when applying for EU funding.” She added that “the Government, through MEUSAC, wants to ensure that the civil society have better access to EU funds.”

Minister Dalli also spoke about the Co-Financing Fund and which is of financial help to NGOs when they are granted EU funds.

While praising the role of those who perform voluntary work, Dr Dalli said that she admires and appreciates the sense of civic commitment of those who perform voluntary work “in the fight against inequality and social exclusion; in raising awareness among other people on important matters, such as their health; and in matters related to human rights, culture and sports.”
