For the forth consecutive year, MEPA will as of this October, be re-starting a series of educational tours that aim to raise awareness about Malta’s biodiversity and cultural heritage. The tours which will run on a monthly basis will remain free of charge for all those wishing to attend. The tours will form part of MEPA’s two ongoing educational campaigns ‘Biodiversity – It’s Your Life, Protect It’ and the ‘Apprezza Darek’ campaign.

The heritage tour, this year, will move to the central part of Malta, in and around the locality of Naxxar. The tour will visit places such as the cart-ruts in tal-Wej, a 16th century chapel and catacombs in the Salini area.

The tour will also include a walk-around tour of the urban conservation area of this authentic village whereby the public will be shown typical features of traditional Maltese houses and how these evolved over the years.

The biodiversity tour will this year explore the area known as Id-Dahar in Mellieha, located along the south western region of the Marfa peninsula, above the cliffs known as Rdum il-Qawwi and Rdum il-Qammieh. Id-Dahar is also a good observation spot, from where one can view a large part of the Natura 2000 site, as well as the Marine Protected Area between Rdum Majjiesa and Ras ir-Raheb. This area houses a variety of habitat types, including Maltese Spurge (Maltese: Tenghud tax-Xaghri), Wild Thyme (Saghtar) and other species such as the Yellow Kidney-Vetch (Hatba s-Sewda), the Mediterranean Heath (Erika) and the African Wolfsbane (Sigret il-Harir).

The dates of the tour are as follows:Free transport will be provided and will leave from Floriana (in front of the Phoenicia Hotel) at 9:00hrs. The tour will be over by 12:30hrs.
