MCCA warns over motorcyle ‘half helmets’ which ‘pose a serious risk’

The Technical Regulations Division of the Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority has advised that a number of motorcycle helmets have been found on the market which pose a serious risk to users.

The helmets, termed ‘half helmets’ do not conform to the applicable European legislation and do not offer adequate protection to the ears and sides of the head of the users, the MCCA said. Hence, in an accident, these parts of the body are not given adequate protection and this can result in the user suffering trauma on the exposed parts of the body.

The MCCAA advises “owners of these helmets to ensure that they are not used anymore and to return them to the place of purchase. Economic operators who have placed these products on the market are ordered to recall the said half helmets and to advise their clients to return them to the place of purchase.”

Any economic operator found to be still placing these half helmets on the market during inspections by the MCCAA inspectors will be liable to legal action against them, as prescribed by the Product Safety Act, the MCCA said.

I would say these were an improvement considering some of the helmets worn in Malta. I have seen WW2 German helmets, yellow safety helmets as used on building sites and even in one case a fireman’s helmet. I have even seen a father on a bike with probably his young son clinging on behind him wearing a Bob the Builder helmet!
