This year’s edition of the L-Istrina BOV Piggy Bank campaign was launched at San Anton Palace by President and Mrs Abela.
L-Istrina BOV Piggy Bank campaign sees over 5,000 piggy banks distributed to schools across Malta and Gozo, as well as in main shopping outlets. Work on this campaign starts months earlier with an army of volunteers from the Malta Girl Guides working to clean the fleet of piggy banks and prepare them for distribution. The latter task is entrusted to the Armed Forces of Malta, representatives of whom visit all schools twice, first to distribute and then to collect the piggy banks.
All principals and heads of public, religious and independent schools today joined President George Abela and Mrs Abela to launch l-Istrina 2013 BOV Piggy Bank campaign. Last year, the Piggy Bank campaign raised €210,000 for l-Istrina and the aim this year is to exceed this amount in aid of the Malta Community Chest Fund during the two month campaign.
Chief Executive Officer Charles Borg thanked the President, “It gives me great pleasure to represent Bank of Valletta during the launch of the L-Istrina Piggy Bank Campaign, which this year marks its 10th anniversary. This campaign is very dear to us because it touches upon several important pillars that we treasure in our Community Relations Programme. Through this campaign, the young generation experiences the beauty of donating without expecting anything in return. It is important for us to be part of this national campaign for solidarity.”
President and Mrs Abela welcomed Heads and Principles at San Anton Palace.
“This is the first time that 250 heads and principals have gathered together to launch the Piggy Bank campaign publicly. Without doubt the support of each and every principal or head has been instrumental in the success of the Piggy Bank campaign. The funds collected over the past four years increased significantly year over year and this is due to the fact that heads and principals take ownership of the campaign and organise a series of activities in their respective school to encourage children to donate by participating in the various initiatives,” said President Abela.
“The Piggy Bank campaign delivers a very important message to school children, that of saving. In this case our future generation is also being exposed to saving and donating for a charitable cause. Nevertheless, the culture of saving will be instilled in our children and that is a very important lesson which should serve them in the future to spend their savings wisely,” President George Abela added.
Mrs Margaret Abela will be visiting various schools during the next two months and various activities are organised by each school to showcase the talent of young children.
Deloitte have been tasked with overseeing the Piggy Bank campaign and will be responsible from the beginning, when the piggy banks are distributed, to the end when all the piggy banks are collected and the funds collected are deposited directly at the bank by the financial services and auditing firm.
The Armed Forces of Malta will be responsible for distributing and collecting 5,000 piggy banks to the 200 schools participating in the BOV Piggy Bank Campaign.
