Update: Power was lost to Gozo in the early hours of this morning as well as many areas of Malta. Gozo started to lose power at 2.20am and was not restored until 6.30am this morning.

Several localities in Malta lost power at around 2.45am, with it being restored about an hour later. However, some areas of Malta were reporting that they were still without power at 6.30am

Update: Enemalta said this morning that the power was lost when a number of generating units tripped at 2.20am during a switching operation internally in order to carry out planned maintenance on transformers at Delimara Power Station.

The Corporation said that the load shedding system automatically attempted to stabilise the frequency however, due to the relatively low load at this time of night, this resulted in a frequency fluctuation which caused other generating units to trip. This then caused a cascading fault that switched the Delimara and Marsa power stations off the grid.

Work immediately started to restart generating units and re-energise the system, with the power supply to strategic locations, such as the Mater Dei Hospital area, restored soon after, the Corporation said.

Most localities in the southern part of Malta were reconnected to the grid by 4.30am. Power was restored to all locations, except for a few remote areas, by 6.30am, Enemalta concluded.
