The Prime Minister Dr Joseph Muscat speaking in a meeting with the Gozo Regional Committee at the Castille this afternoon, said that the Government saw Gozo as a a priority with potential that could be worked upon.
Dr Muscat expressed his satisfaction in the interest shown, which he said was more than expected, in the expression of interest for a cruise liner terminal and yacht marina in Gozo. Saying that now the process has started for a serious assessment of selection which is sensitive to the environment and economy of Gozo. The key to success is accessibility, Dr Muscat said.
The Prime Minister said the Government is looking to carry out studies, both short term and long term, on several possibilities of links between Malta and Gozo. “Among others, it could mean improving the Gozo Channel Service or by introducing other means of accessibility. We must, however, do our homework first before making any decisions. Environmental and economic considerations must always be put into the equation”
Dr Muscat mentioned the feasibility study on the tunnel between Malta and Gozo, which was passed in the last legislature and gave the impression that it was a done deal, however, it has not yet received the European Union funding.
The Government has began the process to re-submitt the request in order that the study will be financed and the people, mostly the Gozitans, can then decide what is the best solution for linking Malta and Gozo, the Prime Minister said.
Dr Muscat also mentioned as the Government is prepared to hear about other methods of air transport . Saying that there is interest from helicopter companies, but that the Government believes that this service must scheduled and not charter.
“This priority on accessibility will lead to achieving the political commitment of this Government, which is to create employment in Gozo. The Budget was to include a programme to help it achieve this aim.”
The President of the Gozo Regional Committee Michael Grech said the Committee is pleased with the cooperation that it has found with the Ministry for Gozo. Adding that he was confident that the Government will keep its electoral promises, which among others, is to set up a Gozo office in Brussels.
Michael Grech said that Gozo has different problems from Malta and therefore needs different methods and ideas aimed at the Regionality of Gozo.

I think that a catamaran service Valletta-Bugibba-Gozo will help a lot especially for those need to cross fast.
The people in Gozo should protest and not allow this. This would only serve to pollute Gozo by allow easy accessibilty for everyone to hop on over and traffic will be a nightmare. What is happening to Gozo? Seriously? You watch a feast on youtube that
years ago was traditional and beautiful and now you have the younger generation blasting hard rock music on the streets. The once beautiful traditional feasts now look like a cheap street fair with vendors and loud rock music. Also, the beaches that were once so serene now have loud obnoxtious tacky parties.
Both Muscat and Gonzi should mind their own business and leave Gozo alone. Both of them were not born in Gozo. We are separated by sea. Also Muscat is always in Gozo because he likes to flee the nightmare that Malta has turned into. Now he wants to ruin Gozo. Leave Gozo alone!!!!
