During Sunday’s evening of music commemorating the 215th anniversary of the victory of the Gozitans over the French in 1798 led by Archpriest Saver Cassar, members of the Gozo University Group (GUG), paid homage by laying their wreath at the foot of the local hero.

The celebrations for Gozo Day 2013 were organised by the National and Regional Celebrations Committee within the Ministry for Gozo,

The GUG said that it felicitates H. E. Ambassador Mons Dr Joe Vella Gauci who introduced the concert to the audience. “The speech was not made up of mere patriotic pomposity, but pictured a deep understanding of Gozo’s social features within an EU context. Socioeconomic factors were also underlined, which hinted towards the more problematic aspects of the island.”

“Whereas Saver Cassar’s victorious story was inevitably revived, the speech moved away from the historic background only to put Gozo alongside today’s modern milieu while advocating the interest of the island first and foremost,” said the GUG.

The Group said it extends its most sincere thanks to all the organisers of the event, including Gozo’s Ministry, Xaghra’s Victory band and Sannat’s Santa Margherita band, the Circolo Gozitano and various other entities as well as all the attendees. Stressing the importance, “not only to commemorate the island’s historical feats, but to progress and evolve as a people and a culture.”
