Members of the Gozo-Greyhound Youth Athletic Club, which is based in Qala, had another great day out yesterday. There was no school, so organiser, Louis Debattista, sent a message to anyone who was interested in going on a hike with him.Louis said that there were 14 in the group that travelled to Gharb to start their Hike. From Gharb they left for Wied il-Mielah, all the way to the window in Ghasri then to the Qbajjar Salt pans by the coast then Triq l-Infern which goes to Ghasri by the Zebbug Cemetery, then to Ghasri to Ta’Pinu and to Gharb.

“We walked 13.7Km. I was happy with all the kids (and dogs) that made this hike which took us about three hours and 50 minutes. We stopped to get them an ice cream which gave them some energy on the last 3.8km to go!” Louis said.

Louis added, “It was a shame that not one of the younsters had been there or knew about these places. I noted more tourists then gGzotians that were walking this hike. The beauty is all around us, take some time out in your life to see what God gave us to enjoy.”

“We are so lucky to be able to do this but we throw it away. Eco-Gozo, or Education of Gozo needs to do more work for our kids and Youths. Young people in Gozo need to be more ambitious, on Friday’s hike they didn’t know about the Ghasri Window and had never been to Ghasri or by the salt pans,” Louis concluded.

The Gozo Greyhounds Youth Athletic Club is an NGO run by volunteers, with parents making up the committee. The young members of the club in Qala meet regularly to train in running and cycling with Louis Debattista.
