Arriva is due to leave Malta in the early part of 2014, with reports that the Government will take over until a new replacement fo the public transport service is found.
The Arriva service on Gozo has had no major problems since its arrival in July 2011, however the service in Malta, received many complaints, including timetable problems, route changes, driver disputes and even bus fires.
The Prime Minister, commenting on twitter this morning said, “the public transport disaster, from bad route planning to EU ticket pricing probe, is a clear example of legacy this government inherited.”
Adding later, “with a new service,we will work hard on difficult but necessary task to raise standards and give #Malta the public #transport it deserves-JM.”
The GWU said that it will meet with Minister Joe Mizzi on Monday, saying that it will stress that all workers employed with Arriva remain in employment whoever the replacement operator will be.
The Union said that the employees future and wellbeing are of foremost importance, adding that “the GWU as the workers Union and the one that represents the absolute majority of workers, is doing its best and will continue working to assure peace of mind.”
Meanwhile, the Secretary of the Section in the GWU, Jeremy J Camilleri, called for unity between the workers now, more than ever, to ensure that the GWU is in a better position to bring them the best results possible in the circumstances.

I can’t believe we are about lose the near perfect bus service we have enjoyed here in Gozo, provided by Arriva. It will be a very sad day when they go. Just a big thank you to the Drivers and Management for being there for the people of Gozo. we could not have asked for better.
Got to agree Terry, The service is nothing short of brilliant. OK, all three buses that Leave Victoria and get me back to Xewkija may all leave within 15 minutes of each other and then another hour wait but working to the times, there is never a problem.
Please lets hope we don’t go back to the once a day routes to Ramla,Nadur, etc
The early morns and late night services have been excellent.
The service here has been excellent and I have to admire the skills of the drivers, particularly around the small village narrow roads with double or ridiculously parked cars.
Grazzi hafna to them all.
A brilliant service in Gozo, cannot fault it and the drivers are always helpful as well. I also find the bus service in Malta very good although some of the drivers could benefit from a course in smiling and being friendly. There is one lady driver in Malta that could lead the course as she always welcomes you with a ‘Good Morning’ .
