The Nationalist Party Leader Simon Busuttil said today the the Party is opposed in principle to the sale of Maltese citizenship.

Speaking during a political event held at the PN Club in Xaghra, the Opposition Leader said that the Nationalist Party’s objections to the citizenship scheme is not only limited on the grounds of principle, but also because the scheme is bad in the interest of Malta.

Dr Busuttil pointed out that the cap of 1,800 applicants for the scheme would not be true, as each applicant would have family members that could also apply, therefore potentially involving thousands of people. He referred to the forthcoming debate on this scheme in the European Parliament.

The Opposition Leader said that the Labour Party may have won the General Election, “but it is clear that Labour is unable to govern.” He added that the Government is claiming praise for stabilising the price of gas and fuel, however this was after it raised the prices itself soon after taking office.

Speaking on the subject of public transport, Dr Busuttil described the recent interview by Minister Joe Mizzi as “unbelievable as it came after negotiations between the Government and Arriva, and he was quoted as saying that the Government did not want to take over the bendy buses, however they are still in the contract.”

Also present at the event were Chris Said and Mario De Marco, as well as the Nationalist Party candidates for the upcoming European Parliament elections – Kevin Cutajar, Francis Zammit Dimech, Norman Vella and Ray Bugeja.
