Louis Debattista of the Gozo Greyhounds Youth Athletic Club and a team of volunteers continued the ‘hike and clean-up’ campaign in Gozo. “What a day we had last Saturday: beautiful weather, it felt like summer by the water with the sun beating on us!” Louis said.
“We had a great turn out for the hike, with 24 kids, 7 grown ups, 4 dogs, a lot of recycling bags and some garbage as well!”
Louis commented, “it’s a shame about what is happing to our lovely island. People need to stop dumping household trash (we found a computer monitor, lots of tiles, a toilet and a chair!), papers, glass and plastic bottles, cans, the list could go on and on.”
“My hope in 2014 is to hike and clean the entire perimeter of Gozo,” Louis said. “Anyone who wants to join would be very welcome. Kids, volunteers of any age, anyone can help and walk or hike by the water, cliffs, beaches and countryside so our island will look good for 2014 and in the future.”
“I am asking NGOs, Local Councils and the Minister of Gozo to help us with transport from village to village so we can keep doing what we intend to do, hiking and picking up recycling.” Louis said.
He added that he would like to encourage the Minister for Gozo to give certificates of recognition for school-aged children participating in this volunteer work to clean up the countryside and beaches of Gozo.
“I have started this project to encourage kids, and families to help out and see the beautiful countryside. We need to encourage people to keep our country clean and tell others to do the same, and to stop dumping their household rubbish and debris and to stop littering,” Louis said.
“I want to thank the 22 Qala school kids for coming and helping,” Louis said. He also thanked the Qala Head of School, and Antoinette, the school’s clerk, for sending the message to years 4,5, and 6.
Louis said he would like to “thank to the German family with 2 children, who saw the event on Gozonews and came from Xaghra to be part of this clean-up hike. Also thanks to the American family who came for both clean-up hikes with their dog; they helped as well!”
“We’re all in this together so I hope to continue to see lots of people helping out with this and enjoying the countryside, exercise and fresh air and each other’s company,” Louis said.
He appealed to schools, to help out by joining them; “we will be passing by your village so when I give you the dates, encourage the children to take part and include the parents as well!”
Louis concluded by thanking the Ghansielem Local Council for providing them with the materials (gloves, bags, wipes) and for providing someone to pick up the bags from Xatt L’Ahmar and the Fort Chambray area.

Hello Mr David Camilleri you are never forgotten, even if you are not around as we still talk about you, how slow you are when we are hike and holding back the group but then you have a good heart. Thank you for helping us it makes a big difference when you with us. I hope you will keep coming to do the entire island of Gozo.
Hey Louis, thanks for the good work you are doing amongst our children. Keep up the good work. It’s vital for the children to learn from a young age to take care of their environment and keep it clean and tidy, to have a better world. Thanks for your good work. Keep it up!

What a wonderful effort you are making on behalf of all of us who love Gozo. There is never an excuse for dumping rubbish. The new recycling centre on Gozo is there for a reason!
Thank you David. The message to people is that Local Council providing pick-ups by your door or have dumpsters 2 time a week to dump materials. I encourage Gozo people & kids to stop and look around you, because even a blind parson can tell that we are destroying our country and if we don’t start now then when. Don’t wait act now. Garbage or Recycle should go out when it suppose to go out. it is amazing the amount of trash on the outside perimeter of Gozo as well inside. I will be posting for the next clean up hike which it may be around Hondoq to Anthony battery and by the quarry and back to Qala. Take care
A big WELL DONE to the Gozo Greyhounds Youth Athletic Club for their work, a great example to us Gozitan’s and Maltese who sometimes act in an irresponsible way at our beautiful Gozitan countryside.
I would like to ask some questions to the Gozo Greyhounds Youth Athletic Club. Does this club have a Website and if the club’s athletes began to use the athletic track at the Victoria Secondary School ?

It will be very nice to join you at the hike but as a parent and many other parents like me that are interested to have their children to join your club it will be very helpful if you give us some information online about the Gozo Greyhounds Youth Athletic Club.

I think there is nothing private or to hide to answer me those questions but they will serve only as a free advertisement for your club.
I am all on the F.book (Gozo-Greyhounds Louis) and all the information about the club what we do and where we train its all there. Regarding the Track we are working on in in fact we had a meeting and if you look at the Gozo News there is a new article ( Positive meeting on Sport awareness in Gozo) it all about what we are trying to do. I have sent also a letter to the KMS regarding the Track in Nino Cremona school & Sport Complex to use. Please join us on the Hike we are going to do another one this Sunday. My hope is to do the enter Gozo slowing with this kids so they can also enjoy and appreciate Gozo. if you are interested on other sport let me know we can meet or join us on one of the hikes. Thank you Walter, Gozo for all. People needs to teach them self and there kids how to keep this place clean and well kept. We all live on the same soil & rock. its amazing what beautiful country we have. Families need to take a walk with kids in the country side to look at the golden rock we have.
