Sharklab-Malta and the Malta National Aquarium released three shark pups this morning at South Quay, Cirkewwa.
Divers accompanied the shark pups at the release point. The pups are from a species known as the Nursehound (Scyloirhinus stellaris – Gattarell tar-Rukkal).
The pups hatched from egg cases recovered by members of Sharklab-Malta from sharks landed at the wholesale fish market in Valletta, and are the result of a recovery and release programme run by Sharklab-Malta in collaboration with the Malta National Aquarium.
Taking part in the release of the sharks along with Sharklab-Malta were the Aquarium sponsors, Maltaqua Dive Centre, M&A Dive Gear Supplies and the main sponsor, Aqualung.
Sharklab-Malta thanked everyone involved and said “all of this would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of members of Sharklab-Malta and the staff at the Malta National Aquarium as well as the support received through the Malta Aquaculture and Research Centre suported by MCAST Agribuisness.”
Also present for the release were Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries and Animal Rights Roderick Galdes and Malta Tourism Authority Chairman Gavin Gulia.
