'Grandparents Day' to be officially celebrated in OctoberThe Grandparents Malta Foundation (Nanniet Malta) has said that a Parliamentary Motion presented in Parliament on Wednesday evening, declaring the second Sunday of October as ‘Grandparents Day’ on a National level, has been approved by both sides of the house. This year, it will fall on the 12th of October.

The established date was agreed to after consultation with the Ecclesiastical Authorities, not to clash with the 3rd Sunday of October, on which day the Church celebrates Missions Sunday.

Furthermore, the Foundation said that, jointly and in collaboration with the Church in Malta, will be celebrating the Feast of St Anne and St Joachim, The Holy Parents of The Blessed Virgin Mary and Grandparents of our Lord Jesus Christ, on the Sunday following the feast day, ie the 26th of July.

Grandparents Day in Malta was created on the 23rd of September 2013, by Philip M Chircop after obtaining, on this day, the Distinguished Patronage of HE Dr George Abela, President of Malta.

The ‘Day’ is being established for the first time in Malta by “Nanniet (Grandparents) Malta,” an NGO founded by Philip Chircop, “with the aim to instil in our siblings respect for our forefathers and to encourage them to look up to their Grandparents not only on this day, but throughout their lives.”

The Gozo Branch of Nanniet Malta was inaugurated last November during a Thanksgiving Mass in Sannat.
