Sr Lydia Formosa, of the Sisters of Charity, celebrated her 105th birthday on Wednesday. This makes her one of the oldest persons on the archipelago. Sr Formosa lives at the Villa Maria Annunziata, in Balzan.
She was born in Victoria, Gozo on March the 12th, 1909 and baptised at St George’s parish. The Parish said that Sister Formosa “still speaks very fondly of her devotion for St George and despite her venerable age, she still has a very good memory and has not forgotten for even one moment the love she nurtures for our Patron Saint.”
Sr Formosa joined the Congregation of the Sister of Charity of St Giovanna Antida in 1931, and worked as a nurse in various hospitals in Malta. During World War II she worked at the Central Hospital in Floriana and then continued with her work as a nurse at St Vincent de Paul Residence for the elderly.
The Parliamentary Secretary for Rights of Persons with Disability and Active Ageing Franco Mercieca, presented Sr Formosa with a bouquet of flowers yesterday on the occasion of her birthday.
