A vote for Labour was still the best option by which to make sure that the interests of Maltese families would be upheld in the European Parliament and in other institutions of the EU, former Prime Minister Alfred Sant said during a well attended social activity at the Marsaxlokk Labour Party club.
Alfred Sant said that many decisions are being taken at European level that have a direct impact on the lives of our families. “It is therefore important for Maltese voters to make their voice heard in choosing who would be contributing on their behalf to these decisions.”
He pointed out that, “by not voting, they would be trusting those political forces which have in the past not told the Maltese people all the truth about what Europe would imply for Malta. Abstention in the coming European Parliament elections would amount to a vote of trust in these forces which have in the past and still quite recently, ignored the true Maltese interest.”
Alfred Sant spoke about the current political situation. The Labour Government is pushing ahead with plans to reduce the costs for families of accessing new sources of energy. “The Nationalist Opposition is trying hard to scare people about the plans that are being implemented. There is hardly any valid reason to take these scare tactics seriously,” Sant said, “not least when one considers how the previous PN administration failed to tackle the arising problems in the energy sector.”
Alfred Sant, who is contesting the EP elections in May, warned against Labour voters keeping away from the coming elections to the European Parliament. “This would not be an intelligent way of marking any dissatisfaction, justified or not, that one could be feeling with the government’s performance,” he said.
