‘Gozo: Faith and Tradition,’ events for Lent and Easter, has been launched by the Minister for Gozo in the Gnien ta’ Blankas Olive Grove, Xewkija, where Ghaqda Drammatika Xewkija, in collaboration with the Xewkija Local Council, will be holding a reenactment of the episode between the Last Supper and the capture and arrest of our Saviour Jesus Christ.
The Minister for Gozo said that a committee was established in January to formulate the activities related to the Holy Week. He added that “anyone choosing Gozo as their destination during the 5th and 20th of April will be spoilt for choice for events to visit.”
The committee headed by Dr Joe Mifsud, includes members Charles Hili, Christine Vella, Andrew Formosa and John Falzon
The committee coordinated the initiative, the Minister said, and it was thanks to the various Directorates from the Ministry of Gozo, the Gozo Diocese, Parishes across the island, Associations and various artists, that this activity is taking place.
The Minister said that previously Good Friday and Easter event would hardly find space in the national media and had been given little publicity on social networking.
He added that this year, event being held in various villages and towns in Gozo, will be promoted through a special booklet and promotional DVD produced by CVC, posters, along with promotion on social networking over the coming days.
The committee had focused on twelve towns and villages where traditional Good Friday procession do not take place, so that the residents would be informed on the activities taking place in Gozo.
The committee said that without the help of MTA, MHRA, GTA, Gozo Business Chamber and the Department for Local Councils this activity would not have been able to take place in Gozo. “Their commitment towards this initiative is priceless.”
The Mayor of Xewkija Paul Azzopardi, with the President of Ghaqda Drammatika Xewkija, Charles Borg presented information about the unique event, ‘Il-Fidwa,’ which will take place in Gnien ta’ Blankas.
