This morning Justyne Caruana the Parliamentary Secretariat for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Active Ageing officially opened the Office of the National Focal Point for People with Disabilities.
The Parliamentary Secretary announced that the Focal Point main office will be located adjacent to her office so that they work hand in hand with each other in order to achieve the best results.
Dr. Justyne Caruana said that the Focal Point Manager, Mr. Manuel Darmanin, who is going to be in charge of this office, will be involved in several roles, to enable him to create an action plan to implement the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disability, which Malta signed two years ago.
“Apart from the implementation of this convention, the Focal Point Manager will have the task to coordinate activities in Human Resources and Disability in various Ministries and departments on different levels, both local and international.”
She added that “the Focal Point Manager will be taking an active role in the work of the Secretariat, including a self-evaluation of current laws as well as new ones that we introduce to the convention, which will really be a useful tool.”
Mr.Darmanin said that as stipulated in Article 33 of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities the Government was obliged to create and implement systems to truly protect this Convention.
“This office will also be responsible for coordinating activities of different Ministries and departments concerning disabled persons and human rights. Other activities related to this sector both National and even International will also be coordinated by this office,” said Darmanin.
