May is awareness month for several medical conditions & disabilities

May is a month of awareness about various conditions and disabilities, including Better Hearing and Speech Month. It provides opportunities to raise awareness about communication disorders and to promote treatment that can improve the quality of life for those who experience problems with speaking, understanding, or hearing.

It is also Celiac awareness month. which is an immune reaction to eating gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. In children, malabsorption can affect growth and development. The intestinal irritation can cause stomach pain, especially after eating.

Correct Posture Month is also in May, this is very important, specially among children, to learn correct body posture, in order for it to develop properly to avoid more serious problems ahead, which may even lead to several complications, including mobility, as well as other problems in the bones, nerves and muscles of the body.

May remembers Fibromyalgia Education and Awareness, a condition that has come to the fore more recently, through information on social media and on the internet. This condition are also becoming more common, especially among children and young people.

The Parliamentary Secretary for Persons with Disabilities and Active Ageing, Dr Justyne Caruana, said that she is in solidarity with those people and their families who suffer from the condition, saying, “We are committing ourselves to launch more awareness campaigns but moreover, to provide further assistance.”

“The Government responded to these needs from its earliest days to ensure that the condition is included in the list entitling the applicant to the Yellow card for free medicines.
