Around 250 Gozitan first year Sixth Formers took part in the Health Day Programme on Wednesday, an annual event in the academic year, which had the special aim of collecting donations to obtain a defibrillator for the school.
The students had the opportunity to join in ‘A Walk for Life’ through ‘Wied Zejta,’ or participate in a discussion on ‘Healthy Lifestyles,’ ‘Healthy Eating,’ ‘Cyber Bullying’ and ‘Sexually Transmitted Infections,’ led by Ms Eileen Vella, Ms Josefa Spiteri, Sergeant Joseph Muscat, and Dr John Xuereb Dingli respectively.
The Breast Care Support group, through Ms Josianne Becker gave a short talk on breast cancer awareness to all the students present. A nursing service for blood pressure, BMI and glucose tests was offered on school premises during the day. A selection of healthy food was also available.
Francesca Mercieca, one of the Sixth Formers, was congratulated on her own initiative and effort, after she crafted bracelets she had designed herself and sold them with the help of other students, the proceeds of which went partly to obtaining the defibrillator and partly to ‘Puttinu Cares.’
A spokes person from Sir Michelangelo Refalo Sixth Form said, “it was a day with a difference, made possible through the teamwork of many teachers and other staff at our school.”
