Yesterday, lifeguards of the Emergency Response and Rescue Corps assisted around 50 tired swimmers at the Blue Lagoon in Comino.

As there is no sea transportation between Comino and smaller island Cominotto, swimmers try to cross between the two islands by swimming across the Blue Lagoon carrying their belongings raised over their heads.

Gozo’s ERRC said that in most cases, sea currents make it difficult for them to keep afloat and are dragged sideways. This is when they require the assistance of the lifeguards to assist them ashore. Nobody was hospitalised.

The lifeguarding service at the Blue Lagoon in Comino is possible due to financial support from the Malta Tourist Authority. Support is also being provided by the Ministry for Gozo, Mgarr Marina, Transport Malta, Police, Armed Forces of Malta, Police and the Civil Protection Department.
