The latest Inter-Schools Chess tournament was held at Stella Maris school in Malta at the end of June. Four girls from the Bishop’s Conservatory Secondary School took part and scored very well.

The tournament is open to boys and girls who are 16 or under, and the field is always very tough. For the second tournament in a row, the winner was a girl which should be encouragement for all girls playing chess.

Casey Sacco from Bishop’s Conservatory, played against the eventual winner, Jamie Farrugia. Casey put up a very good fight and despite the eventual defeat, finished in the top half with 3 wins and 2 defeats.

Eneh Lang of Bishop’s Conservatory, was playing her first tournament and showed great promise with 2 wins, 1 draw and 2 defeats.

April Valentine, also from the school, improved on her previous tournament result with 3 wins and 2 defeats, and the school’s top player, Carol Azzopardi also scored 3/5, but faced the toughest opposition throughout, which resulted in her being placed 7th.

Well done to all and we look forward to the next tournament in October
