The ‘Victory’ Philharmonic Society of Xaghra, Gozo, is organising a commemorative evening to mark the official day when 200 years ago the people of Xaghra were granted free movement after a strict and rigorous quarantine imposed on the village because of an outbreak of the Bubonic Plague, which claimed 104 lives.
The programme of activity will consist of the laying of a wreath of flowers at the cemetery of the plague victims at Ghajn Lukin, Xaghra, and an address by the President of the Society.
A postal commemorative card bearing a special cancellation hand stamp will be launched during the programme of activity.
This special evening is taking place this coming Saturday, the 26th of July, the feast of Sts. Joachim and Anne, who are by tradition considered to be the names of the parents of Mary, the Mother of God.
The event will get underway at 7.00pm on the Belvedere in Triq il-Knisja. Representatives of the Xaghra Local Council be present and everyone is warmly invited to attend.
