The Gozo Cathedral Chapter has said that the Baroque façade of Cafa’s Cathedral has been returned to its former glory, following a long and tedious restoration that cost many thousands of euro.

The scaffolding was finally cleared from the front of the Cathedral on Monday.

Visitors to the Citadel have been able to view the restoration works that are currently ongoing within the Cathedral Square and the whole Citadel. “This project included the imposing façade of the Gozo Cathedral raised on a plan by the renowned Maltese architect Lorenzo Cafà between 1697 and 1711 – over three hundred years ago,” the Cathedral Chapter said.

After a request by the Gozo Cathedral Chapter to the Ministry for Gozo, the restoration of the façade was included in the Citadel restoration project, co-financed by the European Union and the Government of Malta.

The restoration project also includes the restoration of the north side of the Cathedral, the sacristy, the chapel of St Joseph and the adjoining Palazzo Cagliares.

The Gozo Cathedral Chapter gave thanks to all those involved for the inclusion of this restoration in the project.
