Last Friday the Xaghra Local Council signed an official agreement with the Ministry for Gozo to receive financial assistance for a major project under the ‘Eco Gozo’ scheme. Present for the ceremony on behalf of the Council were Mayor Joe Cordina and Executive Secretary Joseph Azzopardi. Present on behalf of the Ministry for Gozo were The Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono and Mr. Joseph G. Scerri, Permanent Secretary.
The major project consists of restoration and construction of rubble walls along San Marzjal and Sellum Roads in Xaghra. During the past years, several residents had complained to the Local Council regarding the disastrous state of these two streets which lead into Xaghra. The Council said that “apart from minimizing the possible of a street accident in the vicinity, this project will definitely embellish the rural environment of the locality. The tender for these works has already been issued and the contractor selected. Works are expected to begin in the coming weeks and fully completed until the first week of November 2011.”
In addition, the Xaghra Local Council is currently doing other projects which include the construction of new belvedere in Church Street (works are scheduled to be completed in July).
The Council applied for funds under the LEADER EU-funded programme to finance a project entitled ‘Network of Leisure Parks in Xaghra.’ Xaghra Council said “that it is doing its best to exploit financing opportunities from the Central Government and from EU to undertake other projects and initiatives for the benefit of our residents.”
