The Parliamentary Secretary for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Active Ageing Dr Justyne Caruana has held the third in a series of public consultation meetings on standards for Residential Homes for the Elderly.

This meeting, which took place at the Villa San Lawrenz Care Home for the Elderly in Gozo, was attended by a number of residents and staff.

The aim of the Public Consultations is to give residents the chance to put their ideas forward on a National Standard for Residences for the Elderly, which ultimately will benefit the residents themselves.

The national minimum standards for care of the elderly in residential homes are based on several principles including: the person at the centre of care, to respect their dignity, freedom, security and well-being (both physical and mental). This includes also the right to privacy in all the present and future needs. To satisfy the aspirations and potential of the person,empowerment, equality, the right to complain and the right to legal redress, among others.
