Gozo-Rocks! Clean & Green hikes organiser Louis Debattista, has said that 2 months after finishing the last hike, which completed a clean-up of the perimeter of Gozo, things are back to the same.
Louis said that the above photos were taken this week in an area by the Gozo Hospital parking area, adjacent to the girl’s school. “What is wrong with people? I am asking very strongly to the Ministry for Gozo, Eco-Gozo and Environmental Protection, to please do something about it.”
“Gozo needs to stay clean, so that people visiting the island from other countries do not have a reason to criticise, saying how full of rubbish Gozo was.”
Louis asked “please let’s meet and discuss about how we can do it better. Please implement and issue fines, invest in signs and a wardens to oversee this problem and report to local councils about it. I care, do you?”

Sadly it does not surprise me. I try to clean up around our apartment and did so before holidaying in the UK. Came back and there is a pile of rubbish back again. I do not understand why so many people cannot respect and take pride in their island.
I agree with everything you say I had a letter published in the times on July the 11th entitled the culture of littering .There are people living on the island that continually dispose of rubbish on the island where ever they want.Big fines and exposure of the offenders would go a long way in clearing up the problem. The beaches are like giant ash trays and certain locations are like rubbish dumps. Please keep the focus on this as it make a mockery of the fact Gozo wants to be a green island.
Eco Gozo? What a laugh. I regularly go out with bin bags and clear up plastic bottes discarded everywhere, particularly at beauty spots. It takes less than a week for the trash to return. Huge fines are NEEDED.
Gozo Rocks Clean & Green Hikes has been hiking & cleaning Gozo’s coast on Sundays, January-June. We start again in January if you want to join us- and keep up the good work in your respective areas! I also think it’s important to report to trash to your local council to encourage/pressure them to take action.
I did receive the following message today from the Gozo Ministry/EcoGozo : “Further to your article that appeared on GozoNews.com (https://gozo.news/52008/2-months-after-last-gozo-clean-up-hike-things-are-still-the-same/), I’d like to inform you that the cleansing section has been duly notified and a clean-up will soon take place in the area.”
I want to thank the Eco-Gozo and Local Council for taking care and cleaning the area by the Hospital parking seating area. Today 2nd Sept. has gone by and it looks really good. There was one bag which was left by someone on the ground. I picked it up and put it in the trash and as well picked up what came loose from the bag, which I noticed the drinks were still cold. Again if the Local Councils & the Minister of Gozo posted signs saying no dumping with a fine for whoever didn’t obey would change these bad habits.
I doubt very much if any enforcement would make any difference. There are laws about dogs fouling the streets but it makes no difference!!!! I just do not understand why people have no care for their own islands.
We have to start somewhere. Plastic, metals , glass would not desolve. If we keep saying that would not work then we are failing. Signs, fines & wardens to start with. We have bike signs everywhere you walk or bike to show you where to go. why no signs for no trashing because every where you go trash everywhere you turn your head. A lot of places we picked up a lot of trash already. It’s said to see a lot of trash again. I care, Gozo rocks care, but you keep seeing the place trashed again then when & what the Goverment going to do about it.
