During a visit paid by Parliamentary Secretary for Health Chris Fearne at the National Cancer Screening Centre, it was remarked that 235 breast cancers have been detected by screening at a stage where no symptoms were present.

22 colon cancers have been successfully identified and treated and 200 cases of polyps were found thanks to the screening programme.

Whilst acknowledging that over 10,000 men and women accepted the colon screening invitation, Mr Fearne encouraged more participation, seeing as colon cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in Malta which could be treated successfully if detected in its early stages.

He stated that the Government is looking into introducing more screening services such as Cervical Screening aimed at strengthening a more personalised surveillance health care.

Mr Fearne thanked the staff for their dedication and hard work to ensure that services offered at the National Screening Centre are further developed.
