Recently 4 members of Gozo’s Emergency Response and Rescue Corps PHTLS (Pre Hospital Trauma Life Support) Malta Faculty instructors recently attended a three-day intensive course in Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC).

The course is designed for combat medical personnel, including medics, corpsmen and pararescue personnel deploying in support of combat operations. The course’s content and structure can be modified for law enforcement special weapons and tactics and special response teams.

The Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) course introduces evidence-based life-saving techniques and strategies for providing best-practice trauma care on the battlefield. TCCC has been documented to produce dramatic improvements in casualty survival in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The course was hosted by the German PHTLS Academy and took place at Medical Academy of the German Army – Sanitätsakademie der Bundeswehr (SanAkBw) München.

It was run by senior TCCC instructors with several years of operational experience within the Spanish Special Forces. Besides the medical directors and combat medics of the German army, the following countries were represented: USA, Spain, Switzerland, France, Ukraine and Italy.

The training will aim for a better TCCC implementation in Europe in the coming years. TCCC is considered as the new Standard of Care for Managing Trauma on the Battlefield, is used by the various sections of the US Army and Coast Guard, most coalition partner nations, NATO and several other countries around the world.

The ERRC said that it is now in a position to offer TCCC courses in Malta. In the meantime, the ERRC is hosting a Pre Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) Course on the 8th and 9th of November 2014.
