The Gozo University Group has said that “This year’s budget included numerous initiatives that should lead to improvements in the standard of living of the Gozitan population.”

GUG said that it welcome these initiatives, and highlights the main points relative to Gozo, such as, the rise in stipends for all students, which will increase with the cost of living (pro rata) and a 100-euro grant that will be given to Employers who employ ITS students.

“Certain long-term projects, which Gozo has the potential to profit from, have also been re-announced. These include studies for both an airstrip in Gozo and a second fibre optic cable, which will both increase accessibility to Gozo, in different ways, GUG said.

GUG added that it is also pleased with the measures taken for implementation of a Medical Hub and a Digital Hub in Gozo. “The organisation believes that these projects have the potential to provide much needed jobs in Gozo for the highly educated Gozitan youth.”

GUG, along with the rich NGO community in Gozo, will also stand to benefit from the development of an NGO hub, it said.

However GUG’s Executive and Budget Sub-Committee said that “with regret, it notes that the recommendations they presented to the relevant authorities were not mentioned in this year’s budget. These included the development of a swimming pool in Gozo; the adjustment of the Gozitan Student Maintenance Grant with the Cost of Living Adjustment; and the fast ferry service between the islands.”

“Implementing these measures would reduce the challenges and financial burdens faced by the daily commuters, Gozitan students and their families, GUG concluded.
