The Mayor of Qala, Clint Camilleri, together with the Minister for Gozo Dr. Anton Refalo, have officially opened the Qala Folk Art Museum.
The Museum was funded through the first scheme for projects for Local Councils in the programme of local development Eco-Gozo (€ 60000) as well as from European funds under the Rural Development Programme for Malta 2007 – 2013, under measure 313 (€ 32 000).
The museum is housed in a property that had been used in the past as a police station.
During the ceremony the Mayor launched the Neighbourhood Heritage Trail, also financed through the same European funds (€ 39,000). The project included leaflet publication and audio-visual material on the places of historical and cultural interest around Qala.
Mayor Camilleri said the vision for the Museum highlights the potential of local culture in the regional island of Gozo.
On his part, The Minister for Gozo said that the museum will be a showcase for local traditions and folklore of the village of Qala and the island of Gozo. “Through this project, the general public and tourists will have the opportunity to appreciate the Gozitan traditions and folklore, which is of so much importance in Maltese society.
This project will also boost the Government’s strategy to advertise Gozo as a distinct tourist destination, Dr Refalo said.

This Folk museum has been finished for over twoyears. What took so long to get it opened so the current council will get a brounie for it? I just did a search cause I can still remember this issue being raised over two years ago. Have a look at this link

Who in their right mind would want to live in Qala now with all that in coming traffic and pollution?
Its not enough that Hondoq is crowded with all those cars that go to Hondoq but now you got a museum in Qala which will add to the car pollution. Has anyone stopped to think what this is doing to the people who live in Qala?
Qala is such a tiny village. So now not only you got traffic going and coming from Hondoq but traffic from cars and buses with people coming and going from the museum.
I attended that ceremony .and all the councilors were there as you can see from the link above . Why on earth the two paul`s are not there when everyone knows how hard they worked? Who did supply the photo?? Everyone here knows what is happening and why. Qala has never been so divided as it is now. Those hidden agendas that some around us got have to be exposed before it is to late. QALA RESIDENTS WAKE UP . This project is true what Jason said that it has been finished for over two years. We are not fools.

Why are people not concerned about the added noise and traffic pollution this museum will add to Qala?
Sour grapes.
The Mayor has made Qala on top of Gozo. One project after the other – he is now redoing all of Qala roads including the main road with tarmac.
No wonder he got such a huge support at the MEP elections with over 13,500 first count votes!
@ Joseph Borg. Sour grapes for what? Answer all the comments above please. The support that he got was due to another MEP candidate who withdrew for personal reasons and because the mayor went after the hunters promising them that he would help he got those votes as they were the two after the hunter`s votes.
And another thing that you should keep in mind , the first chance he got he tried to fly away without success but we had fun with the tourist bus carcade he did.
So as far as I can see he only became mayor as a stepping stone to leave us for something better.
( Please note that I am writing as a nom de plume as I work for the GOV and if my identity is exposed I will most probably get transferred like what happened to one worker from Qala who was transferred to Marsalforn.
Eliza somehow I can’t see people tripping over themselves to get to Gozo and visit the Qala museum! It’s not the Louvre for God’s sake so stop being so negative. It is something which visitors to Qala will find interesting. A bit like the Giant’s Causeway in N. Ireland of which Samuel Johnson famously said, ‘Worth seeing but not worth going to see.’
And as usual we have Clint there in the foreground taking all the praise when everyone knows that the main work in getting this project off the ground was put in by the present Deputy Mayor Paul Buttigieg and his namesake the former PN Mayor Paul Buttigieg.
And this museum, is located in the church square???
Why would it be in the Church Square? Do you actually live in Gozo or failing that have you ever been to Gozo?
Would these 2 mayors have created this museum if it was next door to their house??? They should treat others like they would like to be treated.

She is passionate about all things Gozo but alas not having been here for so long doesn’t seem to quite understand the politics of life here, nor the needs of local people.
