Gozo’s contribution to GDP in 2013 was 5.1%, with GVA up by 4.8%Provisional estimates for 2013 indicate that Gozo’s contribution to national Gross Domestic Product (GDP) at market prices accounted for 5.1 per cent, or €385.8 million, the National Statistics Office said today.

Gross Value Added (GVA) for the region of Malta increased by 4.5 per cent in 2013, while that for Gozo increased by 4.8 per cent.

The majority of the industries in Gozo registered increases when compared to the previous year. The main increases resulted in economic activities relating to education, information and communication, and electricity, gas, steam and airconditioning supply. Decreases were recorded in the industries comprising real estate, construction, financial and insurance activities.

Almost all industries in Gozo registered an increase in employment during 2013.

The total population in Malta increased by 1.0 per cent, whereas that in Gozo decreased marginally.

Main increases resulted in public administration and defence, compulsory social security, education, human health and social work activities; and wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, transportation and storage, accommodation and food service activities. Drops in employment were mainly recorded in construction activities.

The number of unemployed persons (Parts I and II) increased in both Malta and Gozo, by 8.2 and 5.8 per cent respectively.
