The island of Gozo joined its sister island in this year’s edition of l-Istrina, through a special activity held on Boxing Day.
This activity was organised through the collaboration of a group of volunteers within the Office of the Malta Community Chest Fund in Gozo together with an encouraging participation of local singers, dancers and groups who provided entertainment during the programme organised specifically for this just cause.
The activity was held under a specially mounted tent in one of Victoria’s central venues, close to the Arkadia Complex. It attracted a large audience through the course of the programme that started around noon and kept going till late evening.
Apart from being of support to organisers and participants alike, the encouraging attendance also contributed towards a further donation of €14,745.65c towards l-Istrina.
This amount represents an addition to other donations collected by parishes, local councils, ngo’s and other Gozitan groups, which funds were received by Her Excellency the President of Malta, Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca during her special visit to Gozo before Christmas.
The Boxing Day activity held in Gozo was linked with the main activity in Malta during intervals that were also transmitted live on local television stations. Through them Gozitans and many Maltese who are currently in Gozo for the festive season, could join the bigger audience present for the main activity in Malta.
His Lordship Mgr. Mario Grech, Bishop of Gozo, delivered a special message for this occasion during one of these links.
The MCCF Gozo Office expressed its satisfaction for the collaboration received from the volunteers as well as the participants, whose joint effort resulted in a show of solidarity through active of eleven hours participation in this praiseworthy initiative.
