The Gozo Youth Council, in a statement today, expressed its disappointment, that a motion proposed during the recent AGM of the National Youth Council of Malta, for it to have a permanent seat on the KNZ Board was not seconded.

According to the GYC, a representative of a Gozitan youth organisation proposed a motion that the GYC, which represents the youth of Gozo, would have a permanent seat on the KNZ, the Council that represents all the youth of Malta.

It further proposed that this seat would always be that of the Vice-President, the GYC said.

“After this motion was put on the table, “none of the Maltese youth organisations present accepted to second the motion and the meeting denigrated into a discussion on the needlessness for minorities to have a seat assured seat on the KNZ,” the GYC said.

“The situation is that KNZ’s representation of Gozitan youth is patchy at best, given the lack of Gozitan youth organisations as full members; and the GYC representing all of youth organisations in Gozo.” GYC continued, “this motion is complementary to the national level in which Gozitan representation is present also on a Cabinet level.”

The GYC pointed out that it understands that “the Vice-President’s seat proposal was highly questionable, however the notion of maintaining a stable position within the executive board for a Gozitan is categorically needed.”

It is thus that the GYC therefore gives its full support, it said, “given the reasonability of having a framework, wherein regional youth councils can contribute, and be a part of the national one.”

The GYC concluded that it would like to wish the newly elected board of the KNZ “a fruitful and productive term, while looking forward to future collaboration to ensure the voice of Gozitan youth is heard and respected.”
