Carnival fever is about to get underway in Gozo, with everyone hoping that the weather will stay fine for what promises to be fun-packed 5 days of carnival events for all ages.

The programme of entertainment starts in Victoria this evening, with the traditional and spontaneous Carnival in St George’s Square, starting at 7.30pm.

Then on Saturday, it’s all about the children in the morning with family-friendly fun at St Francis Square, Victoria, starting at 10,00am, following that in the evening, before the Nadur Spontaneous Carnival kicks off, there will be a colourful carnival parade in Republic Street to Fortunato Mizzi Street, starting 7.30pm

On Sunday, starting at 3.00pm, the Gozo Regional Carnival kicks off, with a defilé along Republic Street, and carnival dance performed by various dance companies in Fortunato Mizzi Street, with grotesque masks, grand carnival floats and musical bands.

Monday, at 7.30pm the Gozo Regional Carnival will get underway, with a Defilé along Republic Street – Carnival Dance Companies, grotesque masques, carnival floats, bands and Carnival Folk Dance along Fortunato Mizzi Street, Victoria.

The Grand Finalé along Republic Street, will take place on Tuesday, starting at 7.00pm, with Carnival Dance Companies, grotesque masques, carnival floats, bands and Carnival Folk Dance along Fortunato Mizzi Street, Victoria.

Other carnival events will also be taking place in villages across the island, including the very popular Nadur Spontaneous Carnival, from Friday, the 13th to Tuesday, the 18th of February. A unique carnival well known throughout the world. It will take place in December 13th Street and St. Peter & St. Paul Square, as well as the surrounding streets, beginning after sunset each day and lasting till the early morning hours.

In Xewkija, the Carnival activity is taking place on Sunday, and begins at 9.30am with the Banda Prekursur, which starts the defile from St. Bert Street with the ‘Karrijiet’ which ends at St. John’s the Baptist Square.

In the Square there will be a completion of Carnival costumes as well as dance groups and the traditional ‘Kukkanja.’ The events are due to finish at around midday. Xaghra Local Council is organising various activities during Carnival time. On Saturday, from 7.30pm onwards there will be a Carnival programme in Nazzarenu Square with the participation of local dance companies, competitions for the best costume in show, the traditional kukkanja and the traditional kumittiva dance.

The Gozitan traditional ftira will be on sale. A free glass of wine will be given to the audience present. The evening will be presented by local singer Joe Demicoli. The programme finishes at around 11.00pm.

This year visitors to the Xaghra Carnival will also have the opportunity to partake in a piece of Prinjolata, which has been made in aid of the Arka Foundation, and is expected to weigh around 600kg.

Organised by the Fondazzjoni Kummuttiva tax-Xaghra and Tal-Laku Confectionery, the cutting of the ‘Prinjolata’ will be on Saturday, from 7.30pm onwards in Nazzarenu Square.

The ‘Prinjolata’ will also be available on Sunday, at Victory Square in Xaghra from 9.00am onwards.

On Carnival Sunday, starting from 10.30am: Carnival band marches by the Victory Band of Xaghra, starting from near Ta’ Kola Windmill in Bambina Street along Frangisk Camilleri Street, Imqades Street, 8th September Avenue and Victory Square.

From noon onwards: A varied Carnival programme in Victory Square, including a defilé of Carnival floats, dance by local companies and the traditional kumittiva dance. The event will be presented by the comic actors Gorg and Pawlu. The programme finishes at around 3.30pm.

Zebbug, Gozo, also has a Carnival programme of events organised on Sunday for all the family. The Carnival festivities will end with the traditional “Kukkanja” challenge and fun for all. Another attraction will be a huge “Prinjolata” and all those who attend will be able to get a piece to taste for free.

Malta Public Transport has said that it will be running special bus services in Gozo during the Carnival days, from Friday, the 13th to Sunday, the 15th of February.

Gozo Channel are also running extra early morning trips on Sunday for Carnival 2014 in Gozo.
