Following an absence of 13 years, the Gozo Sports Board organised the Gozo Sports Awards, with a presentation ceremony held at the Gozo Sports Complex at the weekend.

The main honour of Gozo sportsman of the year, was awarded to the popular jockey Marvin Cauchi, while sportswoman of the year was awarded to Gozo FC player Emma Xuereb.

The Gozo Sports Board said that these awards are a worthy and appropriate appreciation for those who work hard to achieve their goals, as well as to those who help others gain their success.

The awards for most promising youth were awarded to female football player Maria Farrugia, and young water polo player, Christian Theuma.

The Gozitan team of the year was voted as the waterpolo team Otters, awarded to them in recognition of their 32-years in the national league.

The honour of official of the year was presented to Josef Scicluna, of the Ghajnsielem Redcoats, for setting up the game of baseball and soft ball in Gozo.

A special honour was also awarded to one of the sports administrators who has “worked flat out for the interest of sports in Gozo,” the veteran Joe Psaila.

Present for the evening was the Minister for Gozo Dr Anton Refalo, who spoke about how important health care is to young Gozitan, and they should be taking care of their bodies through sport.

The Minister stated that the opening of a swimming pool in Gozo will soon be carried out.

This news was well received by managers and local swimmers who have been waiting for some time to make this dream a reality. Dr Refalo also said that the Gozo Sports Board will serve as a link between the Ministry for Gozo and the Gozitan Sportsmen.

The Parliamentary Secretary for Sport Chris Agius, who was present for the occasion showed his appreciation to the Minister for Gozo, for the revival of the Gozo Sports Board.

He mentioned that there should be synergy and work with KMS and the Secretariat responsible for sport.

The Chief Executive of the Gozo Sports Board, Alvin Grech, concluded the awards ceremony, by asking Parliamentary Secretary Chris Agius “to always keep in mind Gozitan sportsmen every time think about financing for new projects. For the Gozo Sports Board is working with a PPP for certain projects that it intends to carry out, but sometimes they also need financial help from the Central Government.
