The Friends of the Sick and the Elderly in Gozo held their 26th Annual General Meeting at the exhibition hall, Ministry for Gozo, Victoria.

During the AGM, Dr John Pace the FSEG President, welcomed those present and made a short summary of the year’s activities of the FSEG.

For a quarter of a century, the Friends have been doing weekly visits to the elderly in institutions, donating needed clinical, investigative, therapeutic, educative and other useful equipment to the hospital and, more recently, have been loaning out assistive equipment to bed-bound people in their own homes.

During 2014, the Friends delivered 6,590 meals-on-wheels to housebound elderly in the community. They also donated to the Gozo General Hospital two patient-transfer boards to facilitate handling of recumbent patients and a Pulse CO Oximeter to detect and easily measure carbon monoxide poisoning.

In the last few years, the FSEG developed an on-going equipment-loan service in the Gozo community to help families care for their bedridden elderly or chronic sick in their own homes.

Motorised beds and hoists, wheelchairs, commodes and other assistive Items are lent out at the average rate of one item per week.

To date, the Friends have served 272 families and currently have over 170 items out on loan.
