Prime Minister inaugurates new belvedere in Hamri Street Ghajnsielem

The Prime Minister, Dr Joseph Muscat this afternoon inaugurated the new belvedere in Hamri Street Ghajnsielem, a project which was carried out by the Ghajnsielem Local Council.

The belvedere will offer those who take time to relax there, stunning views of Mgarr Harbour, Lourdes Chapel and the channel, from two levels.

Each level offers a number of seating areas and a flower garden. It is expected to be a popular destination for both the local residents and tourists. Prime Minister inaugurates new belvedere in Hamri Street Ghajnsielem For the start of the inauguration ceremony, the St Joseph Band marched from the Band club to Apparition Square and Hamri Street belvedere, where large crowds and warm sunshine greeted the distinguished guests.

Dr Muscat said that today’s inauguration is not only proof of a beautiful location, but signifies a clear indication that the island can improve its product, working together in locations and within communities.

The Prime Minister said that the Government believes that Gozo should not have to take the leftovers from Malta, but deserves to benefit from its own distinct opportunities. “With this attitude, the island will continue to attract investment of the highest calibre and it is therefore important that the Gozitan product should be enhanced,” he said.

Dr Muscat added that Gozo has aims, among others, for tourism to remain at a constant high level throughout the year. He referred to several instances of where the Government, Gozo Local Councils and NGOs, have all worked together to generate more wealth for Gozo to be enjoyed by all.

The Prime Minister concluded by saying, that last year the registered increase in passengers who travelled to Gozo was among the largest in history. “These are the kinds of initiatives to continue to encourage in the coming months, to help strengthen the island and create more work for Gozitans in Gozo.”

The project was funded from the Urban Improvement Fund (UIF) of MEPA. The funds were originally for the main square embellishment project, “however since no agreement was reached with the Church authorities, they were invested in belvedere project rather than the funds being lost altogether,” the Council said.
