MCAST Student Council declares its position in favour of spring huntingThe MCAST Student Council (KSM) has said in a statement that following a process of consultation with many students from different institutes of the College, including with the use of online surveys, the results received so far show that the majority of students are in favour of retaining spring hunting.

The position of the KSM it said, is based on the information given so far by both the ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ campaigns, past and recent statements by the European Commission, the European Court judgement of 2009 and the final recommendations of the Ornis Committee.

The KSM said that it recognises the right of Malta to apply a derogation, as is the right of every member state of the European Union to do so.

The MCAST Student Council added that it also recognises that there is already a mechanism in place to determine the season for spring hunting is limited and that it is one without any detriment to the European population of the two species hunted in spring.

The KSM said, only the two birds permitted by law, that can also be eaten, should be hunted. “On this same principle we don’t agree that because of a few that do not respect the laws, the season is eliminated for thousands of other hunters.”

The KSM concluded by saying that it “believes that this referendum is not going to change anything about the illegalities that happen in the Maltese countryside and calls on the authorities concerned to ensure, that whatever the result, tough enforcement remains against any law breakers, including the illegal hunting.”
