A meeting was held today between Malta’s Ambassador to UNESCO Dr. Joe Vella Gauci and the Parliamentary Secretary for the Rights of Persons with Disability and Active Ageing Justyne Caruana, where the sectors that fall within the Parliamentary Secretary’s responsibility were discussed.

During the meeting, held at the UNESCO Office in Gozo, both sides expressed their wish of a strong collaboration between the two entities for the elderly and for persons with disability in Gozo.

The Parliamentary Secretary spoke about the major projects this Government has in these sectors on a National basis, including in Gozo.

She mentioned examples of projects already launched by this Government, including three Day Centres at Tac-Cawla, San Lawrenz and Xewkija, respite and long term care services for the elderly, that are being offered for the first time in Gozo in a private home, as well as another new project that will be launched this week.

“In the disability sector, the project for a residential home for persons with disability has already been launched. Work is also in progress on a learning hub for persons with disability in Ghajnsielem as well as the KNPD office, and very soon Agenzija Sapport services will also be available in Gozo – all of this so that the Gozitans can benefit from the services in Gozo,” Dr Caruana said.

Also present for the meeting were officials of the National Commission for Persons with Disability, headed by the Chairperson Mr Oliver Scicluna. They were able to discuss the role of the Commission as an important stakeholder in the area of persons with disability.
