35 projects costing around €5 million, are currently underway in Gozo, which are being implemented 13 by Local Councils, the Government said today.
These projects are being financed through the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) and all of them have to be completed by the end of this year.
“The projects are designed to improve the infrastructure in the villages and towns in Gozo, many of them in order to improve their tourism product, while also raising the standard of living for the local residents.”
This was stated today by Parliamentary Secretary for the European Presidency in 2017 and European Funds Dr Ian Borg, when he visited a project financed by the European Funds in Qala. This project is funded through Measure 313 (measure under the EAFRD), costing € 197,638 and the Qala Local Council is benefiting from this measure under the heading ‘Encouragement of Tourism Activities.’
The Parliamentary Secretary said that the ultimate goal of the project was to create a Heritage Trail, which was officially launched last December and included leaflet publication and audio-visual material on the places of historical and cultural interest around Qala. There is a recreational park and picnic area and the Folklore Museum, also inaugurated last December.
He explained that the project is complemented by other activities related to Measure 323, such as the restoration of rubble walls, which will continue to improve the unique, rural and cultural identity of Qala.
The Mayor of Qala Clint Camilleri was also present, together with Local Counsellors. He said that, “as these projects are now completed, the Qala Local Council will begin introducing cultural and rural activities, thereby increasing the tourism market in Qala.”

If you increase the tourism market in Qala and Gozo, at the same time you will be destroying Qala and Gozo. Increasing the tourism market in Gozo will mean Gozo will be more overcrowded, more traffic, more polution, etc

Peter, the first thing you should be concerned of is the well being of those who live in Gozo, not making a profit. Whats the point of making money if it means being sandwiched like sardines on the island. Gozo is already over crowded and over noisy. The end result will be that people will not want to live in that kind of environment which will cause the Gozo economy to drop. How crazy is a small village like Qala to want to increase tourism? Qala is basically just one long road
that leads to a beach. Why don’t all the mayors of Qala build a tourist attraction site next door to their house? I’m sure they wouldn’t because the noise would drive then crazy.They should treat everyone from Qala like they would want to be treated.
