Six Aqra Mieghi/Read with Me – Maltese language promotion sessions were held recently at the Gozo College Zebbug Primary. The objective of these hour-long ‘Aqra Mieghi’ sessions is to promote a love of books among children aged 0-3 years, through fun and playful activities.
These activities also involve parents or caregivers. Each session includes sharing stories from books, singing of nursery rhymes and other fun activities for this age group. The sessions are aimed at supporting the development of reading and other literacy abilities.
The bilingual Aqra Mieghi – Read with Me programme is run by the Ministry for Education, in collaboration with the Centre for Literacy of the University of Malta and sponsored by BOV.
So far the programme has reached over 10,000 young children and 12,000 parents.
Enthusiastic volunteers are trained to engage both children and their parents. Volunteers are provided with relevant training and opportunities to observe and participate in demonstration sessions.
The National Literacy Agency has reached an agreement with Malta Libraries to extend further the programme.
