AD urges the Government to launch the Constitution ConventionIn the context of the establishment of the Committee for awareness about the Maltese Constitution, the chairperson of Alternattiva Demokratika, Prof. Arnold Cassola, said, “while Alternattiva Demokratika welcomes the setting up of the Committee to spread awareness about the Maltese Constitution, made up of intellectuals, academics and other cultured people, it feels that it would have been wiser for the Constitution Convention to be set up as a first step.”

He stated, “this was promised by the Government in its electoral manifesto in order to implement the much needed constitutional reforms in our country.”

Prof. Cassola added, “ironically, if the Constitution Convention is not set up immediately, the country will be spending hundreds of thousands of euros, if not millions, in order to publish informative material about the present constitution, when this can be substantially revised and updated according to the current needs of the country.”

“Therefore we urge the Government to launch the process for the constitutional revision so that it would really be an inclusive constitution. Consequently, the Committee for awareness about the Maltese constitution would be able to start spreading among the Maltese people knowledge about the updated constitution rather than about its outdated version,” concluded Prof Cassola.
