On Friday evening President Marie-Louis Coleira Preca inaugurated a photographic exhibition entitled ‘Gozo Through the Eyes of Children,’ organised by the Personal Social and Careers Development (PSCD) teachers, together with the Schools’ Management Team of Gozo College, Rabat Primary.The exhibition is being held in aid of the Malta Community Chest Fund at the Exhibition Hall of the Gozo Ministry, St Francis Square, Victoria.

The President, in her speech acknowledged the excellent work being done by everyone at Gozo College, Rabat Primary.The inauguration was also attended by the Minister for Gozo Dr Anton Refalo and the Gozo College Principal Mr Victor Galea, the Head of School Mr Lelio Spiteri, together with various staff and parents.

The project was open to all students from Year 1 to Year 6 attending Gozo College Rabat Primary during scholastic year 2014/15.

The students could choose from four categories, with a specific focus on the island of Gozo:

Natural world: Animals, plants and landscapes; geological or climatological features; and scientific processes and endeavours.

People: Individuals from all walks of life. (Requires written permission from individual/s in photo).

The Gozitan Experience: Events, objects or activities connecting Gozitans to their history or their cultural heritage; photographs that tell us what it means to be a young Gozitan and provide a sense of what it is like to live on this island.

Altered Images: Photographs manipulated for artistic purposes by applying digital and/or traditional special effects (i.e. colourising, toning, collage, photo composites, HDR, etc.).

Out of all the submitted photos 40 were chosen by a panel of experts to be printed and exhibited.

Around 10 of the submitted photos will be altered with the assistance of a graphic designer, then printed and framed.

The printed photographs of the 40 finalists are now being displayed at the Ministry for Gozo from until the 12th of June and will later be sold or auctioned.off after taking part in a regional exhibition.

Half of the profits from this initiative will be donated to the Malta Community Chest Fund while the other half will be used for future educational projects.

The organisers said that the aim of the project was to instill in students an appreciation towards the environment through photography. Getting students outdoors, to explore, question and learn from their environment. Revealing to adults that children’s perceptions of their surroundings are both profound and eye-opening. Showing students that their perspectives however different are valued and worth sharing. Boosting students’ self-confidence by exhibiting their work in a professional setting on a regional level, and encouraging students to volunteer for charitable causes.

The exhibition is open to the public during office hours until Friday.
