Front Harsien ODZ publishes replies by MPs and Party LeadersFront Harsien ODZ has welcomed the fact that all MPs have replied to its question on whether they agree with the proposed development of a university campus in Zonqor.

Front Harsien ODZ said that it also welcomes the stance taken by all PN MPs and Labour MP Marlene Farrugia against development at Zonqor.

Front Harsien ODZ, however, expressed its disappointment that the Labour parliamentary group has not answered its specific question on whether any development should take place in Zonqor point in its collective reply

Front Harsien ODZ also welcomed the commitment by Labour MPs to give prior consideration to the reuse of existing buildings and sites which are already developed and which are located within development zones.

Front Harsien ODZ has insisted that ODZ sites should be completely excluded from any site selection exercise.

On their part the, the Front said that Labour MPs have repeated a formula from the proposed Strategic Plan for the Environment and Development which allows for ODZ development when no feasible alternative is found within development zones.

Front Harsien ODZ stated that it agrees with all environmental NGOs who have criticised the inclusion of this clause in the SPED which effectively creates a loophole for ODZ development and goes contrary to the principles of sustainable use of land resources”.. Therefore Front Harsien ODZ said that it is calling on Parliament to vote against this clause.

The Front has also asked for the stance of leaders of parties not represented in Parliament. It said that it agrees with Alternattiva Demokratika chairperson Arnold Cassola’s proposal that “the whole Zonqor area should be declared a national park as stated in the local plan approved in 2006 and should not be developed.”

The Front also welcomed the stance taken against the development by Alleanza Liberali and the Communist Party of Malta.

Front Harsien ODZ said that it will be expecting MPs to “pronounce themselves on other ODZ developments in the future and will hold them accountable to their promises.”

Front Harsien ODZ also called on the public to join the national protest planned in Valletta next Saturday at 10:00 am, noting that the replies by MPs, none of which defended the suitability of the Zonqor site, is a clear sign that the campaign to save Zonqor is a successful one. A strong turnout next Saturday could make the difference, the Front concluded.
