World Animal Day is being celebrated next Sunday, the 4th of October…..This celebration takes place on the Feast of St Francis of Assisi, October the 4th.

Started in 1931 in Italy, this annual celebration is so that we remember the important role that animals have to play in our world, as well as the people who devote their lives working to protect and care for them.

To commemorate this day, the office of the Parliamentary Secretariat for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights is organising an event next Sunday at the Government’s Animal Sanctuary, at Ghammieri, Marsa.

During this event which is open from 10.00am till 5.00pm, there will be various NGOs promoting their services to the animal world. The Gozo SPCA will have a stall there where everyone will be welcome, they will have merchandise such as identity tags for pets etc and plenty of help and information.

Next Sunday’s event is dedicated to animals, and the events are aimed at enjoyment for the whole family, including refreshment stands. There will be animals to see, educational exhibitions, and other attractions by the organisations and animal sanctuaries that are so crucial in providing assistance to abandoned animals all year round.

One of the attractions will be a dog walk departing from the Church of St Sebastian in Qormi, this will include a blessing of the animals.

There will also be the opportunity to make friends with the dogs that are available for adoption at the Centre and maybe even decide to offer one a loving, forever home.
