During a visit to the Day Centre for the elderly at Ghajnsielem, Gozo Minister Anton Refalo launched the academic year of the University of the Third Age Gozo.

The Minister said, "As a society we should appreciate elderly people and consider them as precious icons coming from past quality and is what makes them very special. Older people have much to offer to society while living a healthy and independent life."

Dr Refalo reiterated how the Government is committed to making life better for the elderly and expressed his pleasure that Gozo will now be investing in a retirement home of the highest quality.

The Minister also mentioned the new budget measure which proposes to launch a pilot fund of one million euros which will provide in subsidies when a qualified carer is employed full or part time to care for an elderly person.

The subsidy will provide up to half the minimum wage and pro rata for part-time carers and will be offered to those elderly persons who are on the waiting list for a place in a home for the elderly.
