The Christmas Don't Drink and Drive campaign has been launched today in Gozo and Malta with the support of the Health Promotion Department, Transport Malta, Civil Protection Department, Sedqa and the National Blood Transfusion Service.

The campaign is being called #checkmate (check your mate) and also has a video to accompany it, helping to encourage people to keep an eye on their mates while they are having fun this Christmas.

The Malta Traffic Police unit will be stepping up patrols throughout the month-long campaign, which runs until January.

Particular attention will be made around known hotspot areas in the evenings and early in the morning, to target those who are risking driving the morning after drinking the night before.

The National Blood Transfusion Service said that one traffic accident could take up to 30 bags of blood, adding that prevention is the natural choice, not to consume alcohol and drive.

The aim of the campaign is to reduce the number of road deaths and serious injuries on the roads of Gozo and Malta, as well as to raise the awareness of the dangers around driving while over the limit.

Any driver involved in a road accident, or who commits any traffic offence, can expect to be breathalysed and may be required to perform an impairment test, the Police have said.
