Gozo Rocks! – Clean and Green Hikes are back! Organiser Louis Debattista is back in Gozo after several months in the USA and has already been been busy planning a series of clean-up hikes, the first of which took place yesterday in Qala.
It was a small group for the fist clean-up and they hiked for 5Km and collected 21 bags. Louis thanked the Qala Local Council for providing materials
Louis said the area that they hiked was not as heavily trashed as it was last year although there were still two places with lots of dumping. There were only eight of them in the group, and they walked for just over two hours. Louis remarked that it was still a lot to have to clean-up in that short amount of time.
Louis said, "I don't understand why people don't just go to the Civic Amenities Site in Xewkija and dump their stuff there. I still think No Dumping signs with a notice of a fine would help (in areas that have been cleaned)."
"Please everyone, try not to dump what you take out to eat or drink, and then trash from your car or track, or after you go out hunting pick up the shells, and please pick up the trash around your house, if we all do this Gozo will be free of trash," said Louis.
The hike on Sunday, the 19th of December will be a a beautiful hike down to Hondoq and around to St. Anthony's Battery and back up.

A great effort, but please Louis do not put the blame on all the Gozitans, its the Maltese that need to pull their socks up and take their rubbish back with them to Malta,mainly weekends The local stray dogs mainly in Qala/Nadur villages, have a field day with all the broken refuse bags left over by Maltese week enders. I am only being honest of what we see & hear from the locals in the area.
Marthese I am not blaming anyone. I am here because I care and enjoy our Island. I think the owners of all the farm house or rentals properties are the ones who should take the trash out on Monday morning- or they should provide hooks high enough to keep the rubbish out of the reach of the cats and dogs. The Maltese take the trash out on Sundays when they leave because the owners tell them to and they want to leave the place clean inside, as they found it that what I know about few farm house. The clean ups hikes we do are in the country side and on paths or beaches. I wish to see more families from Gozo and take part and do some Volontray work and enjoy the apportunete to see the beaut of Gozo on Foot. Thank you
