The MSc Sustainable Heritage academic staff and students from University College London, together with the UCL ISH Director were in Gozo last month, where they visited the proposed Gozo Museum premises at the Lyceum in Victoria.
Heritage Malta said that the students also gave a presentation at the Ministry for Gozo, in the presence of the Minister for Gozo Dr Anton Refalo, when they made worthy recommendations for the future building and the collections that will be housed within the new museum.
Heritage Malta said that studies are underway, and will continue on the planning for a museum, which it said will expose Gozo with all its rich heritage, culture, tradition and history.
The Ninu Cremona ex-Boys’ Secondary School has been earmarked as the premises to host the future Gozo Museum, Heritage Malta said.
A few years ago Heritage Malta stepped in to salvage this important 1950s building designed by local architect Joseph Huntingford (1926-1994), who was responsible for applying a modern approach to Maltese architecture. The ex-school will now be safeguarded and adapted into a multi-functional museum space.
The Gozo Museum will see the establishment of an interdisciplinary museum for Gozo which will put together the amazing story of the island under one roof. Heritage Malta said that it will be taking this opportunity to include the arts in the museum’s permanent display – something which is yet missing in state-owned museums in Gozo. The project will be implemented in collaboration with the Ministry for Gozo.
